Sothoryos

What Is Sothoryos?
Sothoryos is the massive southern landmass, located across the Summer Sea from Essos. Unlike the civilized (if chaotic) world the story's heroes know, Sothoryos is:
- Wild and untamed — hot jungles and burning deserts
- Dangerous — full of diseases and deadly animals
- Largely unexplored — most of the interior has never been mapped
- A graveyard of failed settlements — everyone who tries to colonize it ends up sick or dead
The Dangers That Make It So Deadly
The reason nobody can settle Sothoryos is a combination of terrifying natural threats:
- Carnivorous fish in its rivers that will bite and eat anything
- Great apes so strong they can kill an elephant with one swing
- Venomous, deadly insects (stinging flies, spotted spiders)
- Tattooed lizards (described like deadly prehistoric raptors)
- Wyverns — dragons that cannot breathe fire, but are vicious and fast
- Plague & diseases — colonists die of mysterious jungle sicknesses
The Ruins of Forgotten Civilizations
Sothoryos also contains deserted cities and ruins built by unknown ancient races:
- Massive, mysterious structures whose builders are long gone
- Some connect to legends of ancient empires that predate any known civilization
- These ruins hint at a grand, lost history far older than Westeros
The Native Peoples
The scattered native inhabitants of Sothoryos are sometimes described by the vague and slightly unsettling term "Brindled Men" (referring to their striped or mottled skin). They are largely hostile and mysterious, and very little is known about their culture.
Nearby Islands
Around Sothoryos lie islands tied to its wild reputation:
- Naath — the "Butterfly Isle," whose peaceful people are protected by a deadly butterfly-borne fever
- The Basilisk Isles — a lawless chain of pirate and slaver havens
Why Sothoryos Matters
- It shows the world has truly untamed places. Even the great empires of Essos and Westeros don't control everything.
- It's a source of rare goods and dangers. Wyverns, exotic beasts, and mysterious ruins capture the imagination.
- The ancient ruins hint at deeper history. Who built those lost cities? It's one of the lore's great open questions.
- It reinforces the theme of "unknowable." Like most mysterious places, Sothoryos reminds us how much of this world remains unexplored.
