What Is Yi-Ti?
Yi-Ti is a huge, ancient, highly civilized empire far to the east of Essos, beyond the Bone Mountains. Unlike fractured, war-torn Westeros, Yi-Ti is:
- Rich — known for gold, silk, and great treasures
- Orderly — with emperors, scholars, and a proud, long history
- Advanced — one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world
- Mysterious — distant and barely understood by the story's heroes
The Jade Empire & the Capital
- Yi-Ti sits beside the great eastern ocean called the Jade Sea.
- Its capital is a magnificent city called Yin, where the ruler — sometimes styled "God-on-Earth" — maintains a splendid, gold-covered court.
- The empire's culture emphasizes order, ceremony, and reverence for its almost divine emperor.
The Five Black Forts (Eastern Wall)
On Yi-Ti's far-eastern frontier stand five mysterious black forts:
- Built from a strange, fused, almost glassy black stone
- Legend says they were raised to hold back something evil beyond the edge of the world
- They echo the purpose of the Wall in Westeros — which holds back the White Walkers
Leng and the Old Gods
Near Yi-Ti, in the Jade Sea, lies the large, isolated island of Leng:
- Home to a secretive, ancient civilization
- Center of belief in "Old Gods" and pre-common religions
- A place of great age and mystery that outsiders rarely understand
These old faiths predate the mainstream religions, keeping alive some of the most ancient traditions in the world.
