Asshai and the Shadowlands
Asshai (also called Asshai-by-the-Shadow) is the most famous city of dark magic in the world of Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire. Beyond it lie the grim Shadowlands and the cursed Stygai, the most feared place on the planet. See the overview in Mysterious Places Beyond Westeros.[1]
What Is Asshai?
Asshai is a huge, ancient city far to the east of Essos, built on the banks of a river called the Ash — a shallow, black river. It is one of the oldest human settlements in the known world, and it is entirely associated with sorcery and shadow-magic.
What Makes It Strange
- No children, no animals. Visitors never see babies, young people, or even domesticated animals inside the city walls. Everything living just stops.
- Everything must be imported. Even food and other necessities are brought in from outside — the city can't sustain itself.
- Built of dark stone. The walls and towers have a strange, oily, black look to them, which unsettles travelers.
- No walls around the city. Oddly, Asshai has no city wall despite being so ancient — perhaps because nothing dares attack it.
- Magic everywhere. Shadowbinders, warlocks, and sorcerers openly practice dark arts here — powers far beyond what's common elsewhere.
The Shadowlands
Beyond Asshai stretches the Shadowlands, a bleak, desolate region:
- Gray, sunless skies — perpetual dimness
- Strangled, twisted geography — shadowy, eerie landscape
- A place where light itself seems to fade
The Shadowlands are so forbidding that even the boldest travelers rarely venture past Asshai into them.
Stygai (The City of the Bloodstone Emperor)
At the heart of the Shadowlands lies Stygai (sometimes called the "City of the Bloodstone Emperor"):
- Considered the darkest, most cursed place in the known world
- Even the powerful sorcerers of Asshai are afraid to go there
- Legend connects it to an ancient figure, the Bloodstone Emperor, an evil ruler from prehistory
Why Asshai Matters
- It connects to the Red God. Asshai is a key center for followers of the faith of R'hllor (the Fire God), including Melisandre.
- It hints at deeper magic. The existence of Stygai and the Shadowlands suggests powers older and darker than anything in Westeros.
- It's a famous "beyond the map" location. When characters mention Asshai, it signals the truly exotic and dangerous edges of the world.
- It may hold secrets about the endgame. Some theories tie the Shadowlands and the Bloodstone Emperor to the origins of the White Walkers / the Long Night.
