Mysterious Places Beyond Westeros

A beginner-friendly guide to the 24 most mysterious places in the world of Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire — the lands beyond the familiar map. Based on a YouTube video breakdown, but written so you need no prior knowledge. It also includes places the video did not cover.^[1]

The Big Picture: What Is "the Known World"?

In Game of Thrones and the books it's based on (A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin), the story mostly happens on one continent called Westeros — the land with the Wall, King's Landing, and the Iron Throne.

But Westeros is only a small western corner of a much bigger world. The full world has four giant landmasses:

How to Read the World (Simple Geography First)

Before we visit the mysterious places, here are a few seas and directions so the note makes sense:

• The Narrow Sea — the ocean between Westeros and Essos. (Where Daenerys crossed early on.)
• The Shivering Sea — a freezing sea in the far northeast, near the icy ends of the world.
• The Summer Sea — a big warm ocean south of Essos.
• The Jade Sea — a vast eastern sea, partly surrounded by empires like Yi-Ti and Qarth.
• The Sunset Sea — the unknown ocean far west of Westeros. Nobody has ever crossed it.
• The Bone Mountains — a giant mountain chain splitting Essos in half, running roughly north to south.

Keep this in mind as you read. Everything below is somewhere on (or just off) that map.

The 24 Mysterious Places (The Video's List, Explained Simply)

Here is every place from the video, grouped by region, with plain-English explanations. Most are locations in the books that were never shown on screen (or barely mentioned).

🌴 The Southern Isles and Seas

1. The Summer Isles A chain of warm islands south of Westeros, across the Summer Sea. Famous for beautiful dark-skinned sailors, skilled archers, and pink-andred parrots. They are peaceful traders who rarely fight wars. Think of it as a paradise archipelago in this world.

2. Naath A small, peaceful island near Sothoryos, sometimes called the "Butterfly Isle." Its gentle people are famous across the world for their beauty and their sweet, painless deaths — because a deadly butterfly-borne fever kills any outsider who stays too long. This makes the island naturally "untouchable" and safe from invaders.

3. The Civilization of Tall Men A lost, legendary race of very tall, highly civilized ancient people said to have once built great structures across the world. Most scholars treat them as myth, like we think of lost Atlanteans. Their name comes from old tales of giant, graceful builders.

🏛️ The Ruined Freehold

4. Valyrian Capital (Valyria) and the Smoking Sea Before Westeros was even united, there was the massive, magical Valyrian Freehold — an empire of dragonlords who ruled everything with dragons and sorcery. Their capital was a rich city of wonder. Then, a mysterious catastrophe called the Doom of Valyria destroyed it all in a single day: earthquakes, volcanoes, and shattered land. What's left is the Smoking Sea — a boiling, deadly stretch of water around sunken ruins. This is where the smoking, volcanic ruins of the ancient capital now sit, and it's considered cursed and near-deadly to enter. (This directly connects to House of the Dragon — the dragon Bloodwyrm was swallowed by the smoking sea in the series.)

5. The Island of Ib and the Thousand Islands Ib is a cold, rocky island far out in the Shivering Sea. Its people, the Ibberse, are a short, hairy, reclusive folk who hunt whales and carve ivory. Just offshore are the Thousand Islands — a scattered maze of tiny, foggy islands. Sailors tell strange, unsettling stories about them: whispers of cannibalism and worship of strange sea-gods. Spooky stuff that no one has ever confirmed.

🧊 The Frozen North Seas

6. Ice Dragons and Mermaids of the Shivering Sea The Shivering Sea is the frozen ocean at the top of the world. Legend says two eerie creatures live there:

• Ice Dragons — enormous beasts made of living ice and cold magic, far rarer and more mysterious than the normal dragons we know.
• Mermaids — but not pretty mermaids from fairy tales; the lore describes them as creatures that only superficially resemble humans, and sailors fear them. Both are pure legend — no one has proven they exist.

7. The Easternmost Country Vaguely named because the maesters (scholars) of Westeros simply don't know what lies there. It's the farthest known land eastward, past the Shivering Sea's far edge. It's a marker of how little of the world is mapped.

🏜️ The Far Northeast

8. Bone Town A strange, grim settlement east of the Bone Mountains. Some say it's built on a mountain of bones — the remains of a long-forgotten war. It's a bleak, harsh place that traders and travelers dread passing through.

9. The Bleeding Sea A legendary body of water whose name conjures blood. Some tales say the sea turned red with the blood of a massive ancient battle. Like many far-east legends, its true nature is unknown — only the alarming name and myths survive.

10. The Winged Men A mythical race of flying humans said to live beyond the eastern mountains, in the snows near the edge of the world. They carry off animals — and even small children — according to terrifying campfire tales. George R. R. Martin deliberately included them as a "here be dragons"-style unknown.

🔮 The Land of Magic

11. Asshai / Asshai-by-the-Shadow One of the most famous mysterious places. Asshai is a huge, ancient city far to the east, built on the banks of the Ash — a black river. It's a city of shadowbinders and sorcerers, where dark magic is openly practiced. It has no children, no animals, and no food grown inside its walls — everything must be imported. The buildings are made of black stone. Melisandre (the red priestess) came from here. Think of Asshai as the "dark magic capital" of this world: notoriously creepy, powerful, and secretive.

12. Shadowlands and Stygai Beyond Asshai lies the Shadowlands, a bleak, dark region of gray skies and twisted, shadowy geography. At the very heart of it is Stygai (also called the "City of the Bloodstone Emperor") — the darkest, most cursed place in the known world. Even the sorcerers of Asshai fear to go there. If Asshai is the scary magic city, Stygai is the final horror beyond it.

🏯 The Great Eastern Empire

13. The Golden Empire of Yi-Ti This is the most advanced and wealthy human empire in the east — essentially this world's version of a grand, ancient Chinese-style civilization. It has emperors, silk, gold, great cities, and a long, proud history. Unlike war-torn Westeros, Yi-Ti is huge, rich, and orderly — but it's also distant and mysterious to the story's heroes. Its capital is a city called Yin.

14. The Eastern Wall: Five Black Forts The far-eastern frontier of Yi-Ti is guarded by five mysterious black forts. According to legend, they were built to hold back something evil from beyond the edge of the world — reminiscent of how the Wall in Westeros holds back the White Walkers. Some of these forts are said to be made of a strange, fused, almost glassy black stone. Their true purpose is one of the great unsolved mysteries of the lore.

15. Leng and the Old Gods Leng is a large, isolated island in the Jade Sea, with its own ancient, secretive civilization. It's home to beliefs in "Old Gods" and old religions that predate the common faiths. Like Yi-Ti, it's a place of great age and mystery — a hidden, self-contained culture that outsiders rarely understand or visit.

🌋 The Wild South

16. Sothoryos The massive southern continent. Unlike Essos's civilization, Sothoryos is wild, hot, and dangerous. There are deserted cities built by unknown ancient races, jungles full of deadly animals (carnivorous fish, great apes, venomous creatures, and wyverns — dragons that can't breathe fire). Everyone who tries to colonize it gets sick and dies of jungle diseases. The native peoples are sometimes described by the horrible, vague term "Brindled Men." Few sane people go far inland.

17. Ulthos The southeastern landmass on the very edge of the known map. It's so little-described that it might not even be a continent. Just about all that's known is that it exists, and that it's mysterious and unexplored — the truest "blank space" on our map.

18. West of Westeros The unknown ocean west of the "safe" continents. Several explorers have tried to sail across the Sunset Sea toward lands that might exist far to the west. Legend even speaks of a land with no winter and no death far to the west (told by Lord Gylbert Farwynd). No one has ever returned to prove it. This is the lore's open question: what really lies west of Westeros?

19. The Lands of Always Winter (Far North) The region beyond the Wall — north of the known realms. It's where the White Walkers / Others are said to come from. Nearly unmapped, icy, and deadly, with ancient forests and frozen wastes. Properly part of the main story, but genuinely mysterious and uncharted.

20. The Dothraki Sea and Vaes Dothrak The vast grassland sea in the middle of Essos, home to the Dothraki horse warriors. And Vaes Dothrak, their sacred, strange city where no weapon may be drawn, and a huge market gathers traders from all over the world. The "sea of grass" is a sweeping, mysterious landscape in its own right.

21. Qarth — the "Greatest City That Ever Was or Will Be" A magnificent trading city on the Jade Sea, famously beautiful and arrogant. In the show, this is where Daenerys visits the House of the Undying — a mysterious sorcerer's tower full of visions. The city's ancient wealth and weird magic make it a notable mysterious place the video skipped.

22. The Red Waste A towering, burning desert east of Qarth where Daenerys and her starving khalasar nearly died crossing. Mystery and desolation, no thriving life — an unforgiving land.

23. The Basilisk Isles An island chain near Sothoryos, infamous as a haven for sailors, pirates, and slavers. Bars, brawls, and lawlessness — a wild, dangerous "pirate isle" region that the video only glossed over.

24. The Great Moraq and Other Jade Sea oddities An enormous island in the Jade Sea whose people are said to be strange and distrustful of outsiders. Along with nearby islands with their own isolated, mysterious cultures.

Why These Places Matter

You might wonder why we should care about places the story never visits. Here's why they matter to understanding Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon:

1. They show how big the world is. Westeros is just one kingdom in a vast globe. Knowing that makes the stakes feel bigger.
2. They hint at more magic. Places like Asshai, Stygai, and the Five Black Forts suggest powers far older and darker than what we see in the main story.
3. They might connect to the ending. Some of the story's biggest secrets — where the White Walkers come from, what lies west, the Doom of Valyria — touch these unknown lands.
4. They make rewatches richer. When characters mention Asshai or Yi-Ti, you'll now know what they're talking about.
